Item 232. Flatcar, Third Ave Line (March 30, 1947)
Coopers Square
The soon-to-disappear Third Avenue elevated line in lower Manhattan. In a
scene unfamiliar to modern-day New Yorkers,
this old wooden coach train leaves the Fourteenth Street station. The special
train included a flat car which offered a 360 degree view of the city. Members
of the Joint Rail Fan Committee, an organization whose members have an amateur
interest in trains,
take in the sights. In the background are the Empire State and the Chrysler
Buildings.
